I’ll post a somewhat happy ending... that E21 I was restoring, that I use to post the occasional photo of, is mostly complete. It starts and moves under it’s own power now. I just have a couple sensor issues to figure out then I can start tuning the megasquirt. Unfortunately global warming hasn’t kicked in enough to prevent winter in Canada yet so it’s going into hibernation unfinished yet again. Next year it’ll be on the road for sure...only took me 5 years to get it done lol!

Looks sweet.

There’s a black E21 that has lived at 2 different mechanic’s garages over the past 10 or 12 years near me.  I always see it sitting unloved, with a broken taillight and a flat tire.  I’d love to make an offer, tow it home and work on it, but I’m reasonably certain I’d be in over my head in short order.  Nice to see that some occasionally show evidence that their owners care!

Nice!  I've started to look at a mega squirt conversion for my E28, but it is in pretty good mechanical shape right now.  I would really like to get rid of the AFM and go to MAF, and that will require a chip change of some sort, so that will probably be the tipping point.  I'm also pretty lucky to be in Houston where I can work on it and drive mostly year round.

Just being brutally honest on this one after having done a few megasquirt conversions. Unless you are planning more mods, like cam, headers, stroker, turbo, etc., doing the conversion just to have a MAF instead of an AFM isn’t really worth the effort.

Thanks, this one has definitely got it s fair share of love. It was a budget restoration however so hopefully I can get a good 10yrs out of it before it starts showing its age again.

Looks great. I really like the color. Good on you for doing the resto.

I daydream about restoring some old unloved vehicle. Then I come to my senses and remember I don’t even change my own oil.

That is some good feedback.  I guess I need to take the plunge and dive into my AFM - I’m 90% certain I have a “dead” spot, but I’ve been hesitating on taking it apart due to my general ham-hands.  From what I’ve read it is relatively delicate and I don’t want to screw it up completely.

I think there’s a company out there that rebuilds AFMs. If you search M30 AFM refurbish I’m sure something will come up.
